This three-dimensional quilled egg is undeniably a unique and meaningful birthday gift. The design on the egg is based on the "Chinese Auspicious Pattern", a type of traditional Chinese decorative folk art that places emphasis on its auspicious connotation. |
Here, in the design of Celebrating Longevity, the pattern of a red-crowned crane bearing a gift of longevity peach connotes celebrating/congratulating (someone's) birthday/longevity. The Chinese character for crane is a homophone for the Chinese character for celebration/congratulations. The crane itself and the peach, both being symbols of longevity, represent birthday/longevity. The crane is set against a backdrop of traditionally colourful auspicious clouds. The egg form is chosen because it is typically associated with birth. |
To achieve the three-dimensional quilled look, the different parts of the egg are quilled before casting on a modelled form and then removed. Paper strips of a uniform width of three millimetres are used throughout to make various quilled shapes that number to more than one thousand and five hundred pieces. Gold-gilded strips meanwhile lend a touch of magic to the crane. |
