Framed

This category refers to Paper Quilling in picture frames.  The quillworks are mounted on a suitable background, usually paper or card, and then framed.  Often, the frames come without glass panes because of the three-dimensional nature of Paper Quilling.  Otherwise, shadow boxes will be used, or customised three-dimensional framing requested from professional frame makers.
Miniature / Freestanding

Miniature Quilling refers to quillworks that are not more than ten centimetres in size.  Miniature Quilling rarely comes as individual pieces, but almost always as an entire set.

Freestanding Quilling refers to quillworks that are completely self-supporting.  A freestanding quilled piece may be displayed on a base but must not be attached to it for support.  Otherwise, the base needs to be quilled in order to be classified as "Freestanding Quilling".

Among the different types of Miniature / Freestanding Quilling commonly made, one favourite is Jinisans.  Jinisans, derived from the term "Jinny's people", is named for their creator Jinny Alexander and is used to mean three-dimensional paper representations of people.  They range from five centimetres to ten centimetres in height.
Boxes

This category refers to Paper Quilling that comes in the form of boxes.  The quillworks are used to decorate the box, which can be made of any material.  Sometimes, entire boxes can be made out of Paper Quilling too!
Quilling and Beyond

This category comprises Quilling Plus and Quilling On.

Quilling Plus refers to quillworks that include the use of other materials and/or techniques as a complement to Paper Quilling.

Quilling On refers to quillworks that are mounted on a material other than paper.  Commonly used materials are wood and polystyrene.  In fact, quillworks can be mounted on any surface imaginable!
